COGIC Charities, the benevolent arm of the Church of God in Christ, is donating $50,000 to aid COGIC churches and families devastated by the floods that have recently shattered many areas in Southern Louisiana.

The goal is to provide water, food, clothing and any recovery essentials needed after entire homes have been engulfed by water. Wherever a COGIC church exists, and especially when a natural disaster strikes, COGIC Charities seeks to be a force for prayer, provision, hope and encouragement.

Correspondingly, the International Missions Department has dispatched a team on the ground in Louisiana to assess needs and to assist with cleanup, water damage and rebuilding.

Testimony From Inside The Southern Louisiana Flood

Supt. Mark Ellis, Chairman COGIC Publishing House

Pastor, United Christian Faith Ministries COGIC

Baton Rouge, LA

On Saturday, August 13, 2016, I was watching the news while watching outside my home.  The river rose 8 feet in 24 hours and I could literally see the water slowly coming toward my house early that afternoon. I called the Parish Emergency line and asked if it was expected to flood at my location, but they assured me that the water would not rise to a level that would flood my home.  When I hung up the phone, God said to me, “Get your family out of this house.”  I quickly packed 2 days’ worth of clothing, loaded my family into the car and headed to Jackson, MS.

On our way out of the city, we saw approximately 20 of the large Army National Guard trucks racing to our town with large boats.  I was wondering what they knew that we apparently didn’t.  What we did not realize was that the Amite River levee could not hold the 55 inches of water we received in less than 10 days.  The levee gave in and the city flooded in areas unimaginable.

In a very short span of time, you needed boats to get to our neighborhood and to my church.  Within one day’s time, I felt that I had lost almost everything that I had worked so hard for over the last 25 years.

Starting over is never easy but when people are depending on you and you can’t respond to them, it’s heartbreaking. So many of my members were calling me late Saturday night, asking me to pray that they be rescued by boat as the Amite, Comite and Bayou Manchac rivers rushed toward and through their homes.

Having support from brothers and sisters who have empathy and care means so much at a time like this.  It takes someone who has gone through something similar to truly understand what we are currently experiencing.

ADOPT-A-CHURCH PROGRAM

During such difficult times for so many of our churches in Southern Louisiana affected by the recent flooding, COGIC Charities is launching the Adopt-A-Church Program. We are asking jurisdictions, districts and local churches around the country to adopt one of the devastated churches in the Louisiana area.

When you adopt one of these churches, you will donate funds that will go directly to that church in order to help them repair, rebuild and assist members of their congregations with severely damaged or completely demolished homes.

Our brothers and sisters in Southern Louisiana sincerely need our help. Help COGIC Charities help the Louisiana flood victims. Please…DONATE TODAY!
