Church of God in Christ Opens 60,000 Square Foot Super Resource Center In Houston, Texas To Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

Memphis, TN (September 21, 2017) The Church of God in Christ (COGIC) opened a Super Resource Center in Houston, TX today to help those in need of assistance after Hurricane Harvey.

The residents of Houston and surrounding areas are still feeling the devastation left by Hurricane Harvey weeks after the storm destroyed homes and left many without basic necessities.  The Church of God in Christ has been helping those in need since day one. On Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 11am, the official ribbon cutting ceremony took place at the COGIC Super Resource Center, 440 South 66th Street Houston, TX 77011.

This 60,000 square foot facility will house items received from regional centers across the country, to include: furniture, hygiene kits, toiletries, non-perishable food, bottled water, diapers, new undergarments (men and women), new children’s clothing, new men and women’s clothing, cleaning products, baby formula, plastic garbage bins, shovels, tools, plastic trash bags and so much more.

Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr. says, “Immediately after the hurricane hit the Houston area, we knew we had to do something to help. We asked our churches around the country to send all of the needed items and they have responded in overwhelming fashion. Today marks the culmination of weeks of organizing.  There will be over 30 semi-tractor trailer trucks that have been, and will continue over the next week, bringing items from around the country to provide assistance to those in need in the Houston community.”

Bishop Blake dispatched the 2nd Assistant Presiding Bishop Jerry W. Macklin and Missions President Bishop Vincent Mathews to survey the devastation in Houston and surrounding area. COGIC churches have rallied around their communities and affected churches providing material and spiritual support.  Teams were also dispatched to remediate mold in the homes of several elderly community members who were sleeping in mold-affected houses.

The Church of God in Christ, headquartered in Memphis, TN, is one of the oldest and largest Pentecostal denominations in the world and the 4th largest Protestant group in the United States with churches in 87 countries worldwide and a membership of nearly 6.5 million adherents.
