Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
With deep sorrow and heartfelt sympathy, we, the Church Of God In Christ, extend our condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and to all those who loved and were touched by the life and ministry of Pope Francis. His passing marks the end of an era, and we join the world in mourning the loss of a beloved leader and shepherd.
Pope Francis’ dedication to faith, peace, and service will be cherished for generations to come. His final appearance on Easter Sunday, giving the Easter blessing, is a poignant reminder of his unwavering commitment to ministry, even in his final days. His ministry was a testament to the love and grace of Christ, and his tireless efforts to promote dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among people of all faiths—will forever be remembered as an enduring legacy.
The Church Of God In Christ was particularly grateful for Pope Francis’ efforts in fostering unity and peace across denominational and faith boundaries. His life was a powerful witness to the power of God’s love to transcend divisions and build bridges of understanding, compassion, and mutual respect. His leadership will not only be remembered within the Roman Catholic Church but also embraced by Christians and people of goodwill around the world.
In this time of grief, our prayers are with the Roman Catholic Church, the people of Rome, and the global faithful.
As a token of our respect and solidarity, I have sent Bishop Dickerson L. Wells, the Church Of God In Christ Adjutant General, and The Reverend Nicholas South, Adjutant Scribe and Assistant General Secretary, Church Of God In Christ to attend the Pope’s funeral and represent the denomination and myself at this solemn occasion. Their presence is a reflection of the bond of friendship and mutual respect that exists between our churches.
May God grant comfort to all who mourn, and may His peace that surpasses all understanding guide the hearts of the faithful during this time of loss.
In Christ’s love and compassion,
Bishop John Drew Sheard
Presiding Bishop and Chief Apostle
Church of God in Christ, Inc.
