Dr. Elton Amos, MD, MPH

Dr. Elton Amos is a seasoned medical professional with over 20 years of specialized experience in correctional care medicine, administration, community healthcare, and substance abuse treatment. Currently serving as a Medical Director II at the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, Dr. Amos oversees healthcare operations for women’s prison facilities in the state, advocating for improved health care availability and quality.

Dr. Amos’ passion for global healthcare is evident in his research on medications for opioid use disorder in pregnancy, conducted within a state women’s prison facility. His mission extends to supporting medical staff, mentoring students and residents, and contributing as a public health servant.

In addition to his role at the Department of Adult Correction, Dr. Amos is a Collaborating Physician at Elizabeth City State University. There, he provides clinical guidance and oversight to nurse practitioners and physician assistants serving the university community.

Dr. Amos’ career is marked by diverse roles, including Health Commissioner for the Church Of God In Christ, Inc. (COGIC), Public Health Medical Advisor and Bishop for COGIC in Puerto Rico. His leadership in both secular and faith-based health initiatives highlights his commitment to serving communities in need.

His academic credentials include an MD from Indiana University School of Medicine and an MPH from Columbia Southern University, with a focus on public health and epidemiology. Dr. Amos’ educational journey is complemented by a Family Practice Residency at Fort Wayne Medical Education Program and postgraduate studies in Sciences at Marquette University.

Dr. Amos holds unrestricted medical licenses in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Indiana. His skills span mental health, preventive medicine, urgent care, global health, chronic illness management, and telemedicine, reinforced by certifications like BLS from the American Heart Association and NRCME from the US DOT FMCSA.

In 2025, Dr. Amos became the author of “An American Health Comparative in Black and White,” adding to his repertoire of contributions to the medical field. Beyond his professional endeavors, he is a devoted husband, father, and talented musician. Dr. Amos is also fluent in German and Spanish, enhancing his ability to connect with diverse populations.
