Church Of God In Christ Hispanic Initiative Stands in Solidarity with Hispanic Communities

Memphis, TN (February 17, 2025) The Church Of God In Christ (COGIC) Hispanic Initiative, under the leadership of Superintendent John Perez, reaffirms its unwavering support for Hispanic communities facing growing concerns over immigration policies and enforcement actions. In these challenging times, COGIC stands as a beacon of faith, hope, and protection for those experiencing fear and uncertainty.

Superintendent John Perez, Director of the COGIC Hispanic Initiative, shared a heartfelt message to the community:

“In these challenging times, we want to remind our Hispanic brothers and sisters that you are not alone. We know that the fear of massive deportations has created a climate of uncertainty and anxiety, but our church community stands with you in solidarity. Your rights, your dignity, and your safety matter, and we are here to support you. We encourage you to remain strong and resilient, knowing that God’s love surrounds you. Together, we will continue to provide resources, guidance, and a safe space where you can find comfort and protection”.

COGIC’s commitment to justice and compassion echoes throughout its congregations nationwide. The church has launched various initiatives to support Hispanic communities, including legal resources, safety planning, and spiritual guidance to help families navigate these uncertain times.

The presiding bishop, J. Drew Sheard, also expressed his firm support:

“To our beloved Hispanic communities surrounding our COGIC churches, we want to offer words of comfort and solidarity during these uncertain times. We know that the fear of massive deportations is weighing heavily on many of you, but please know that you are not alone. You are valued members of our communities, and we will continue to support and uplift you in prayer. Let us remain united, knowing that together, we are stronger.”

In its ongoing commitment, the COGIC Hispanic Initiative is actively providing resources to families, including safety plans, legal education, and emergency preparedness strategies to ensure that individuals are informed of their rights. The church encourages all community members to take advantage of these resources and to seek refuge in their local COGIC congregations.

“We believe in helping families create safety plans to protect their rights and ensure their well-being. Our guidance includes vital steps to prepare for emergencies, defend your rights during interactions with law enforcement, and provide resources for safeguarding your loved ones,” added Superintendent Perez. “Together, we stand in solidarity to ensure everyone feels safe, informed, and supported in times of uncertainty.”

COGIC remains steadfast in its mission to provide spiritual and practical assistance to those in need. The church calls on leaders, faith communities, and organizations to join in this collective effort to protect and uplift vulnerable individuals.
