YES! It's Game Time for SMM Robotics!
Hello SMM Coordinators and Robotics Champion Mentors!
It is time to set our Game Plan in Motion for our AIM Convention where SMM will have its 1st Robotics Competition! We want to thank each of you for the hard work and dedication you have poured into our young people as you prepare for this monumental event! I wanted to reach out to you to provide direction and resources as you are preparing your young people. Please read all the way to the bottom.

2. There are many ways for your team to participate.
You can compete in the Robot Competition ONLY
You can compete in the Research Competition ONLY (in the form of an Essay, Digital Video or Poster Board that you bring to AIM)
OR You can compete in BOTH. However, to be eligible to win the Robotics Award of Excellence, you must participate in Both
3. There are two categories for a total of 7 Awards: Robot and Research Project
Robot Awards
a. Mechanical Design
b. Programming
c. Strategy & Innovation
d. Robot Performance (Highest Mission Points Earned)
Project Awards
e. Research Project
f. Innovative Solution
g. Robotics Award of Excellence**Best Overall* a Team must Participate in BOTH the Robot and Research Project Competition
4. To assist in your planning for AIM, here is a General/Tentative Schedule for Robotics –
Tuesday
9-10:30 (3 concurrent sessions)
Teams: Team Set up, practice, prepare for competition
New Students:
Intro to Robotics 101: Building and Basic Programming
10:35-12 (3 concurrent sessions)
Teams: Team Set up, practice, prepare for competition
Meeting for Team Coaches ONLY: Questions, Review of Match Schedule
New Students:
Robotics 201 (Students must have completed Robotics 101 or are familiar with NXT)
Advanced Programming
Wednesday
9-10:30 (2 concurrent sessions)
Teams: Competition Robot Matches, Judging of Robots and Research Project Presentations
New Students:
Intro to Robotics 101: Building and Basic Programming
10:35-12 (2 concurrent sessions)
Teams: Competition Robot Matches, Judging of Robots and Research Project Presentations
New Students:
Robotics 201 (Students must have completed Robotics 101 or are familiar with NXT) Advanced Programming

5. Teams should bring the following to AIM:
Robot
Robot Kit
Laptop with NXT/EV3 software loaded on
Please save all programs on a thumb drive or on the Cloud to ensure there are many places where you can retrieve your programs just in case of computer glitches.
We do ask for ONE team to bring their Green city Challenge Missions for the Competition Table. I will bring a setup for teams to practice on. If you'd like to bring your set, please email me directly: [email protected] or [email protected]
6. Go to Robotics Ministry | Scholastic Motivation Ministries for Judges' Scoring Sheets and ALL things Robotics! Videos of Missions are there as well.
7. Volunteers are needed! If you and/or you have persons attending AIM who can help out with the workshops or the competition, we would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT! Please email me directly: [email protected] or [email protected] if you can assist with one, two or all sessions.
