New Day! New Season! New Department!

The International Sunday School Department (ISSD) of the Church of God in Christ has a strong and rich history.  We stand on the shoulders of great men and women who pioneered this work, traveling and building Sunday School departments in every state. Sunday School, the reaching, teaching, training and nurturing arm of the church is experiencing a “New Day, New Season and New Department!”

We’re living in a day where the church must remain current and relevant! Our visionary leader, Bishop Alton Gatlin, has developed a team that is taking this department to unparalleled heights! Supervisor Vanessa Gatlin works closely with our president and department.

Serving in Bishop’s Cabinet are International Field Representative Cleolia Penix, 1st Vice President Rodney Atkins, 2nd Vice President Darrak Scurles, 3rd Vice President Althea Sims, Assistant International Field Representative Charla Johnson and Chairman Wilfred Brown. Managing the day-today operations is Executive Secretary/Director of Finance, Waynell Henson.

An excerpt from “The Sunday School World Volume 1” published in 1956 states: “A well-planned, carefully executed, long range training program is a proven method of building a successful Sunday School…Trained teachers are important. They are more successful. They do a better job.”

To that end, the ISSD Sunday School University exists with 9 robust directorships, providing answers to growth, structure and administration issues that will catapult your Sunday School to the next level!  Courses from this curriculum are also offered during the O.T. Jones Institute in St. Louis.

ISSD ministries birthed under Bishop Gatlin’s leadership include Love Alive Campus Ministry (Pastor A.L. Shaw), Scripture Levite Ministry (Pastor Tony Simmons), and the Disability Ministry and Day Camp (Superintendent Eddie Miller and Evangelist Nancy Jones).

A partnership was formed with Joni and Friends International to match resources and provide assistance to churches desiring to become handicap accessible and provide training for meeting the needs of the disabled.

Our new face includes an unprecedented branding and social media presence that has catapulted the ministry of Sunday School onto the fingertips of our church on various platforms.

ISSD contributors are writing “Quarterly Commentaries” and “Teaching Tips” for the “Annual COGIC Sunday School Commentary,” providing resources for training and growth.

Sunday School publications Go Win!, Your Sunday School Can Grow!, Church Growth Through
