8/28/2013 – Today commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the famous “I Have a Dream” speech delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr. at the March on Washington on August 28, 2013. While Martin Luther King, Jr. is well known as a political activist who fought for social and political change, it is not as widely known that he was also a pastor and dynamic preacher. His dream was deeply rooted in the Christian Faith – as God loves justice (Psalms 33:5) and shows no respect to person (Romans 2:11). King’s call for nonviolence had its foundation in the Sermon on the Mount – where Jesus exhorts us to “turn the other cheek” in Matthew 5:39. Martin Luther King, Jr. had definitely “come to the kingdom for such a time as this.” Both his life and his legacy have forever changed the social landscape of our country.
