Memorial Day is a time to reflect and remember those who have served their country. For those who may not know, the Church of God in Christ, Inc. has the policy of being Conscientious Objectors and perform Noncombatant Military Service. During World War I the Selective Service Act was enacted which required all young men to register for the draft. Bishop C.H. Mason sent a telegraph to President Woodrow Wilson requesting the members of the Church of God in Christ, Inc. be exempt from combatant military service on the basis of Religious Liberties. After three years of harassment based on this stance, Bishop Mason's request was granted and members of the Church of God in Christ would only be required to serve in Noncombatant Military Service.
Brave men and women of the Church of God in Christ, Inc. have served in Noncombatant Roles all over the world. As the COGIC Chaplaincy Department's slogan says "Into the Everywhere; The World is Our Parish" – COGIC members have been serving Christ by serving others for many years. Today, we salute and honor all of the men and women who have dedicated their lives in this service.
